Shang-Chi premieres new trailers, Kevin Feige talks about ‘Experiment’ controversy at world premiere

With Shang-Chi having its world premiere at the El Capitan Theater in Los Angeles on Monday, Marvel Studios unrolled more footage of its next big-screen adventure: a 30-second teaser trailer and a one-minute clip. The first reminds everyone that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside people like Iron Man, Thor and Captain America. The latter establishes Shang-Chi’s bonafides as a martial arts expert as he swings on a bamboo scaffold as he talks to hooded men with blades. Meanwhile, at the world premiere, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige also addressed the growing controversy of the “experiment” after the film’s star, Simu Liu, tweeted about it.

Last week, during the company’s quarterly earnings conference call, Disney CEO Bob Chapek described the exclusive theater launch of Shang-Chi – unlike the one conducted by Emma Stone Cruella, led by Scarlett Johansson Black Widowand Jungle Cruise with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, who opted for daily releases – as an “interesting experience”, the last Marvel film would stay in theaters for 45 days before moving to Disney + and Disney + Hotstar. Chapek said they wouldn’t make the same decision in hindsight as the theatrical market wasn’t as healthy as everyone thought it would be, with the Delta variant of COVID-19 hitting the US now.

But Shang-Chi himself, Simu Liu, was offended by Chapek’s remarks, leading to Twitter over the weekend with his response, along with four photos of him and cast members from the set of Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings: “We are not an experiment. We are the underdog; the underrated. We are the ceiling breakers. We are a celebration of the culture and joy that will persevere after a year of fighting. We are the surprise. I’m fired for making history on September 3rd; JOIN US.”

Feige was asked about Liu’s comments on Shang-Chithe world premiere, and the head of the MCU said: “[Liu] not a shy man. I think in this particular tweet you can see it and I think everyone sees it, a misunderstanding. That was not the intention. The proof is in the movie and we swing to the fences like we always do. With the amount of creative energy we put in and the budget, no expense has been spared to bring this source story to screen. ”

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is Marvel’s first film to feature an Asian superhero in the lead, following the studio’s commercial and critical success with Black Panther – the first Marvel movie with a black superhero in the lead role. Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton noted in a separate interview that it is also Marvel’s first “purely martial arts film” and described it as a cross between a “classic kung fu film and a family drama”. For the latter parts, Cretton noted that starring Matt Damon and Robin Williams, Good Will Hunting, was an inspiration.

O Shang-Chi the director wouldn’t want to know how his film is placed in the new era of Marvel’s multiverse after the events led by Tom Hiddleston Loki, while Feige joked that “there is a direct line from where [Shang-Chi] go to the next one. ”

Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings will be released on September 3 in theaters around the world. A release date in India has not been set.
