Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings soared to a $127.6 million (about Rs. 932 crore) opening weekend at the world box office, with gross revenue expected to soar above $139.7 million (about Rs. 1,020 crores) by the end of Monday, after forecasts for the four-day Labor Day weekend in the United States. The latter total is split between $83.5 million (about Rs. 610 crores) from theaters in the US and Canada – beating analysts’ predictions before the weekend by almost 40 percent – and $56.2 million (about of Rs. 410 crores) from cinemas elsewhere around the world.
That $56.2 million outside the US and Canada came from a total of 41 markets, with the top performers being the UK ($7.7 million), South Korea ($6.5 million), France ($4 .3 million), Russia ($3.2 million) and Japan ($2.8 million). The British earnings of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the biggest three-day opening weekend for a COVID-19-era film in the UK. In India, the new Marvel movie yielded Rs. 10 crores (about $1.37 million) net gross on opening weekend – net gross does not include theater cut, unlike box office figures for other markets presented here.

Furthermore, Shang-Chi and Legend of the Ten Rings achieved these box office numbers in India, despite the lack of Maharashtra – the state with the highest number of screens in the country – and limited capacity to 50% in theaters elsewhere. Similar restrictions also limited the Marvel film’s box office potential in Australia (where 70% of theaters are still closed), parts of Southeast Asia (where theaters are closed) and China (where theaters are closed). Shang-Chi has no release date). China is huge for Marvel movies and even more important for Shang-Chi since the title character is Chinese-American.
It will be interesting to see how the box office performance of Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings impacts Disney’s overall launch strategy. While the Hollywood giant has committed to an exclusive theatrical premiere for Shang-Chi in March, Disney CEO Bob Chapek recently lamented the state of the COVID-19 in the United States thanks to the Delta variant. Although Shang-Chiopening weekend numbers outweigh estimates, they are no match for Black Widow, which had a daily release with Disney + Premier Access.

Said that, Black Widow had a more established Marvel Cinematic Universe character and one of the biggest stars in the world leading Scarlett Johansson. By comparison, Shang-Chi is a little-known character from Marvel Comics – and this is the first studio film and the first lead role for star Simu Liu. Disney hasn’t decided what will happen with their next Marvel movie, eternal – led by a ensemble of Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Kit Harington and Angelina Jolie – in case it opens only in theaters or is available at home on the first day.
