Google Search is showing blank or broken images in its Top News carousel. When you Google any topic, the Top Stories panel – which shows the most-read news from various media – now shows thumbnails of blank or blurry images. The problem began to surface since Wednesday morning, and several users have flagged the problem on Twitter with screenshots. The broken image issue still persists and Google has yet to offer any acknowledgment or explanation for it. We contacted the company to comment.
Thumbnails in the Top News carousel appear white or blurred. If you’re using a desktop browser, it’s best to see three stories at the top of the carousel. In some cases, some thumbnails look good while others don’t. In most cases, however, all three thumbnails appear white, blurry, or broken. A similar issue is also seen in Google’s mobile browser.
In this screenshot, some of the thumbnails are looking good.

According to a report by the Search Engine Roundtable, the problem has been arising since the morning of August 18th. Several users went to Twitter to share screenshots of the issue. Some users have tagged Google Research Representative Danny Sullivan, Google Research Advocate John Mueller, and others, asking if this is related to some specific keywords or a general flaw.
As of this writing, Google has not officially acknowledged the problem and offered an explanation as to why this is happening. It is also not known when a correction can be expected. 360 Gadgets contacted Google. This report will be updated when we have a response. It is noteworthy that, in addition to the image issue, everything seems to be working well, as the carousel links are opening well on the respective news sites.
