River swim teen swept out to sea

A search is under way off the Aberdeenshire coast after a teenager was swept out to sea.

It is understood the 16-year-old boy had been swimming with friends in the River Deveron, near the mouth of the river at Banff, at about 02:30.

He was swept away by the flow of the water. His two friends made it to the river bank and called for help.

Coastguards described the stretch of coastline as “benign” and said the river was not swollen.

Police said the 16-year-old, who has not been named, was last seen near the Banff Bridge.

Two lifeboats, an RAF helicopter and four local coastguard teams are still searching.

Rescue teams are concentrating their search in the nearby Banff Bay.
