FALZES/PFALZEN, Italy (AP) -Jon Izaguirre of Spain won the 16th stage of the Giro d’Italia on Tuesday in 4 hours and 2 minutes while Joaquin Rodriguez retained the overall lead.
Izaguirre had been in the lead group for most of the day. He broke away from it on the final sharp climb of the mainly uphill 173-kilometer (107.5-mile) trek from Limone sul Garda to Falzes/Pfalzen.
Rodriguez crossed 8 minutes and 57 seconds behind Izaguirre.
It’s Izaguirre’s first win on a grand tour. He finished 16 seconds ahead of Alessandro De Marchi and Stef Clement.
Wednesday’s 17th stage moves the Giro to the Dolomites, with four tough climbs along the 186-kilometer (115.58 mile) route from Falzes/Pfalzen before the final descent into Cortina d’Ampezzo.
The Giro ends on May 27 in Milan.
