GHENT, Belgium (AP) -Sep Vanmarcke of the U.S. Garmin-Barracuda team beat favorite Tom Boonen to win the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, the first spring cycling classic in Belgium.
Belgium’s Vanmarcke won the first major race in his career when he jumped from the wheel of Boonen in the sprint finish and had enough of a gap left to lift his arms in jubilation as he crossed the line. Boonen, riding for Omega Pharma-Quick Step, had been hotly tipped to win the Belgian season opener after a string of good results in the Middle East.
Sky’s Juan Antonio Flecha was the weakest sprinter of the leading trio left after 200 kilometers (125 miles) across the undulating countryside of northern Belgium.
